Inspiring Notes

“How does therapy work?” “You are in a dark, unfamiliar room. The therapist does not carry you across, but also does more than switch on a light. They help you see what is there, notice which obstacles are actually dangerous and which only feel so, and stay with you while you learn how to move without hurting yourself.”

- Dr Rohan.

"Fear Dissolves in Contact There is a story about villagers who became terrified of a strange green object growing in their fields. No one had seen it before. Rumours spread that it might be dangerous, poisonous, or bring misfortune. Out of fear, no one touched it. A monk passing through the village listened to their concerns. Without arguing or reassuring them, he walked into the field, cut the object open, and ate it in front of everyone. Nothing terrible happened. Slowly, the villagers approached. They tasted it themselves and realised it was simply a watermelon—sweet and harmless. The fear vanished. Therapy works in a similar way. Fear rarely dissolves through explanation or logic alone. It reduces when we are able to approach what we avoid, in a safe and supported way, and discover through experience that it does not destroy us. What is feared in imagination often becomes manageable—or even nourishing—when met directly."
